Quarant’anni fa nasceva Memphis. . importante ricordare quel momento di passaggio, che ha segnato la storia del design. Non per amore della nostalgia ma per cogliere il senso di uno spirito pionieristico, controcorrente e aggregante di cui c’è ancora bisogno oggi.

Quarant’anni fa questo spirito si è manifestato attraverso un’estetica decisa, quasi prepotente, in grado di far tremare i polsi ai benpensanti. E si è espressa grazie a un materiale, il laminato Abet, rivelandone la dignità.

Come si esprimerebbe quella radicalità oggi?

Non abbiamo voluto rispondere a questa domanda da soli. Al contrario, attualizzando il dialogo maestro-allievo che fu fondamentale alla nascita e allo sviluppo di Memphis, abbiamo chiesto a otto progettisti che si sono formati nei nostri studi prima di iniziare una brillante carriera da solisti, di esplorare con noi lo spirito di Memphis. Dar forma quindi a oggetti capaci di esprimere il senso e il significato di radicalit. oggi, utilizzando quel mondo di infinite possibilità. che . la materioteca di Abet: laminato, quindi, ma anche Metalleido, MEG, Diafos, HPL.

Come conviene ai progetti collettivi e di ricerca, SuperSuperfici! è quindi stato un workshop ma anche un viaggio, soprattutto temporale. Insieme agli otto studi coinvolti ci siamo infatti immersi nel passato che fu di Memphis, per coglierne la portata rivoluzionaria di pensiero oltre la manifestazione estetica; nel presente delle superfici Abet, cos. cambiate negli ultimi 40 anni, trasformate dalle nuove tecnologie e dalla ricerca; e nel futuro, per immaginare il senso, oltre che la forma, di un gesto progettuale veramente radicale oggi.

Memphis was born forty years ago. It is important to remember that moment of transition which marked the design history. Not for nostalgia’s sake but to grasp the sense of a pioneering, nonconformist and aggregating spirit that is still needed today.

Forty years ago, this spirit manifested itself in a decisive, almost overbearing aesthetic, capable of making the well-meaning tremble. It was expressed through a material, Abet laminate, revealing its dignity.

How would the spirit of Memphis manifest itself today?

We did not want to answer this question alone. On the contrary, we asked eight designers who trained in our studios before starting a brilliant solo career, to explore the spirit of Memphis with us, by updating the master-student dialogue that was fundamental to the birth and development of Memphis. To give shape to objects capable of expressing the sense and meaning of radicality today using that world of infinite possibilities that is the Abet material archive: laminate, but also Metalleido, MEG, Diafos and HPL.

As with all collective and research projects, SuperSuperfici! was a workshop but also a journey, mainly in time. We immersed ourselves in the past that was Memphis with the eight studios involved, to grasp the revolutionary importance of thought beyond the aesthetic manifestation. We immersed ourselves also in the presence of Abet surfaces, which have changed so much in the last 40 years, transformed by new technologies and research; and in the future, to imagine the sense, as well as the form, of a truly radical design gesture nowadays.
